Returning Love of the Humble Pencil

How strange that I find myself back here again sharing my thoughts and stuff with the world. Changes in my life seem to urge me to write it down almost as if it will not happen or escape me unless I do this, a statement of intent methinks. At the age of 46 one would think I was past these stages and had become more mature in my thought processes, but alas I shall always remain a scatterbrain of randomness.

So here I am writing my blog post haste of another decision in my pursuit of creativeness, and I think that this will be a final one and I have to say I am quite pleased about that. Buying supplies for new hobbies and being a bit obsessive about it can be very expensive especially when one has a change of heart ! I stopped drawing two years ago for a couple of reasons, and instead I fell in love with Crochet, which filled that creative gap for me. I had a lot of fun choosing different yarns, colours, textures, making lots of different things, even selling some mad items at local craft fairs. Actually I went overboard and ended up with way too much of everything which would of taken a few good years to use up….obsession again. Everything I have is kept in a small cupboard (don’t have a huge amount of storing space ) and every time I went to get a ball of yarn or buttons, on the shelf there was the remaining pencils, pens, paper etc looking at me for longingly waiting to be picked up and used again. I knew in my heart that the day was coming soon when they would be in my hands creating pictures, I had missed them so much…too much if I am honest. So to cut a long story short I have picked them up again and start to draw and loving every minute of it. I am rusty it has been a long while but I intend to practise every day drawing all kinds of everything and doodling too. I gifted quite a few of Crochet supplies to other crafty friends, as I know that they will use it a lot quicker than I will, and also donated some to a dog rescue charity who has a lady that makes wonderful blankets to raise money for the pooches and moggies, a good cause methinks. I kept some yarn and stuff for me to use for personal projects and maybe to make a few gifts, great for doing in the long dark winter evenings.  So without much more ado, this is my first dog drawing that I started last week, its not to bad for a first picture after a few years, however I see many mistakes in it, that are very basic and just a matter or practice and to remind myself of technique to create fur, texture etc. I will finish it and then move on to something new. Its good to be back sharing my love of art, pencils and pens.Jimmers

Crochet and all that stuff

Not having had much of a  chance to check around WordPress recently I have noticed some changes to the layout, which takes a bit of getting used to, however I like it but need to do a tad more reading until I am totally in sync with it….I have been away from blogging for too long!

So I am going to share a couple of photos with you of my crochet efforts of the last six months the first one being straight forward Beanie hats with a bit of decoration.crochet hats

I really liked doing these, easy Half double Crochets or Treble and a few rounds of slip stitch’s for the band. I used chunky yarn in various colours my favourite being the green which is made by  Stylecraft Yarn a mixture of acrylic and wool. During my tours of charity shops I came across two 400 gms balls reasonably priced and snapped them up. It is amazing what yarn you can find around the charity shop these days, and even parcels of fabric which is great for lining purses etc. I made hats and gloves in the green and gifted them at xmas to a couple of my friends and still have enough left over to make a few hats for me.

The other thing that I have been making is flowers, these can be so wonderfully simple and yet others very complex, and are great for using as embellishments on clothing, homeware, and any other craft project, and even jazz them up a bit adding beads, buttons, ribbons etc.  One of my next projects is to learn how to line a crochet item with fabric, and to master Amigurimi a little better, so more on that next time.

Back to Blogging

Gosh it has been a while since I have blogged here, but I always knew in my heart that I would return at some point. So what have I been up to lately…loads of stuff, from really learning to Crochet properly and doodling ideas in my sketchbook for future projects. I have been debating for a while now whether to combine my passion for crochet within this blog instead of having a separate one that I set up some months back. To be honest I don’t have to the time to keep writing for two blogs, so it seems to be a better idea to keep it under one roof so to speak and hopefully that will make it a little more interesting.

So 2015 bought many changes into my life, the hardest was the loss of little pooch. Sadly she got very sick and we had a very hard decision to make, and knowing her as we did we decided the best and kindest thing was to let her go. We were heartbroken and devastated, as I imagine that many of you who have gone through this will understand. You never get over the death of a loved one four legs or two, you just learn to live with out them and adapt to a new way of living. For me personally it has been hard as I have always had dogs in my life and mostly two so when I lost one there was always the other that needed me and that helped with my grief, but this time I only had Blue, and I found it very hard being dog free for the first time in many years. For many personal reasons we have decided not to have another dog, so we are getting on with life at a pace that is comfortable to us, and doing some of the things that we have not been able to do up till now. Blue is always with us, heart and soul as are my other pooches, never forgotten and always loved.

On the Crochet front I have learnt so many new things, made my first amigurimis, hats, gloves, learnt some Tunisian Crochet, beaded pieces, and so much more. I have not done a huge amount of drawing but my love for it is as strong as ever and I have picked up the pens again and started some new stuff which I will share along the way.

I hope that the last year has treated you all well, and I am slowly trailing through many of your posts on a catch up spree, wonderful stuff that I have read so far, and look forward to much more.

Thankful thoughts.

I have had some really nice and thoughtful comments since my last post and would like to say thank you for all those, however I would like to reassure you all that my passion for drawing has not disappeared, I am just taking a break from it whilst I learn to crochet properly. I am one of these people who throw myself in whole heartedly to a new thing, so no half measures, which is a pain in the ass sometimes because everything else goes on the back burner, but that is how I am wired. My sketchbooks and pens are not packed away they are living in the unit opposite my sofa so always in plain sight, ready for me to pick up in due course. I hope to complete the 100 mandala challenge if nothing else but it will take longer than I thought but it does have no time limit. I will also leave this blog up and running because I will return to it and in the meantime for my crochet passion have set up a new one here which is yet to get its first post    https//  so for any of you who feel to come follow me over there that would be great. Flu break

Greetings ,
It has been a while since my last post and I almost thought about giving up this blog as I went through a soul-searching time whilst battling a nasty bout of a flu-like infection. However I am feeling better and more positive which is a good thing, but I am struggling a bit with what creative direction that I want to go in. Drawing has been in my soul forever, and I love using the humble graphite/coloured pencil to create my art, combining it along with pens and ink to explore new ideas, but these past few years the passion to pick them up as waned considerably. At first I thought it was “artist block” something that we all go through at one time or another, but it has gone on too long methinks for that. At the same time my life has changed quite a lot of last few years, different priorities and needs, life and health issues and it has all had an effect in many ways, but the one constant thing has remained is the need to be creative in one form or another. Having this bout of flu and picking up a crochet hook at the same time seemed to be a eureka moment and I felt in my soul a stirring passion for hooks, yarns, and  patterns to make wonderful things. So much to learn, a whole new world of creativity just inviting me in to play and explore, what can I say I am hooked. I am not saying that I will not ever pick up a pencil/pen again but for the time being crochet and learning it properly is my passion. It does leave me with a dilemma as to if I should leave this blog as it is or to set up a new one for my crochet adventures….so what do you think ?

Hooked on Hooks

It has been a few days since my last post, and that is because I have found a new hobby that I have become addicted too… Crochet. I have never had much interest in taking up something like knitting, embroidery, quilting etc but have long admired the beautiful work that can be created by it. Having said that I did in my twenties try Crochet but like all things life, kids got in the way and it never really amounted to much. Since starting a Craft club two weeks ago, many of the ladies who come are gifted in these crafts and without really thinking too much about it I picked up a hook and asked one of the ladies to show me how to do it and that was that….I am hooked and obsessed ! At the same time of this happening hubby needed to use my desk for a project of, his so my main computer and majority of my art stuff is temporarily put away until the weekend when I get it back. Time on my hands, I have been out and purchased some gorgeous coloured yarn and am making squares to create a blanket for me pooch Blue. I have yet to master all the stitches but I work best one step at a time, so once I have the basics, I hope to move on to making a few items of clothing, and in due course will add some pictures of my efforts.

Mandala 5 and 6 of 100

WP_20141106_005 WP_20141106_008

It has been another busy week, and not a whole lot of art done either, except for these two mandalas for the 100 mandala challenge. They are smaller ones with the paper measuring no more than 4 x 5 inches so quick to do when time is short. I love the owl one and although the circles were done with my trusty compass, the rest of it is free hand so quite uneven in places. The other one started out as something entirely different which I did not like at all, so progressed to what it is now, which is a little more acceptable. I have to be honest and say that back in the day if a drawing was not going the way I wanted it to, it went into the bin, but nowadays I look again leave it along for a day or so and then make it into something else, much more fun and lest wasteful too. Having said all that it works for art that I am doing for myself but for a commissioned piece most definitely not, perfection then takes over, but as I am taking time out of that market for a while, it is just nice to enjoy what I am doing now.
